What to expect – Life at Sea
Active Participation: You’re not just a passenger — you’re crew. Expect to be involved in the day-to-day sailing tasks: hoisting sails, steering the ship, climbing the rigging (if you’re up for it), and participating in watches (yes, even the 4 a.m. ones).
Watch System: The voyage runs on a 24-hour schedule, divided into “watches” — typically 4-hour shifts of work, navigation, lookout duty, and sail handling. It’s a great way to experience the rhythm of traditional seafaring.
No Prior Experience Needed: The crew teaches you everything you need to know — it’s all about learning by doing.
Sustainability Focus: The ship acts as a floating classroom and research vessel, emphasizing ocean science, sustainability, and international cooperation.
Lectures & Workshops: You’ll often attend talks from marine scientists, environmental advocates, and leadership experts. It’s part voyage, part seminar.
Communal Living: Bunks are in shared quarters (think hammocks or small beds in open sleeping areas). It’s cozy and promotes camaraderie.
Simple Comforts: Facilities are basic but functional. It’s not luxury cruising — it’s about the experience, not the frills.
Stunning Views: Sunrises and sunsets at sea, dolphins racing alongside the hull, and star-filled skies, free from light pollution — they’re magical.
Global Crew Vibes: You’ll likely meet people from around the world, creating a multicultural, collaborative spirit.
Meals
There are typically three main meals a day, often served at fixed times depending on the watch schedule:
Breakfast – Usually hearty, includes bread, cheese, cold cuts, porridge, eggs, & coffee or tea.
Lunch (Midday) – The main hot meal of the day, often a warm dish like stew, pasta, fish, meat, or vegetarian options.
Dinner (Evening) – A lighter hot meal or leftovers, possibly soup, sandwiches, or a simple dish.
(There may also be a late-night snack or something available for those on night watch)
Prepare for
Seasickness: Bring seasickness medication—this leg will sail down the West coast of Washington, Oregon, and Northern California on the Pacific Ocean.
Weather Variability: Pack for all climates (cold, wet, hot).
Mental Readiness: Long days, communal living, and structured schedules.
